The Museum of the City – Civic and Diocesan, managed by the Municipality of Acquapendente, is a true treasure chest of art, history, and faith, housing nearly a thousand invaluable artifacts. The collection ranges from archaic and Renaissance ceramics to liturgical art objects, from precious paintings to stone artifacts, offering visitors a fascinating journey through the centuries.
Works of Art That Tell a Story
Among the exhibited artworks stand masterpieces by internationally renowned artists such as the Master of Marradi, Sano di Pietro, Alessandro Algardi, and Girolamo di Benvenuto del Guasta. Each piece tells a story, showcases the artists’ skill, and reveals the many facets of past culture and society.
The collection of the Museum of the City is spread across three exhibition locations, each with its own unique features:
The three museum locations are situated along the road that coincides with the urban crossing of the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route that still today forms the backbone of the urban layout of Acquapendente. Visiting the museum thus also means embarking on an ideal journey along this historic path, retracing the footsteps of pilgrims and immersing oneself in their atmosphere of devotion and spirituality.
